Order clomid online cheap, ...and here is Part 2 of the In conversation-interview with Chris Finlay, who does research on media coverage of the Olympics (Part 1 here).
HÖ: Underlying this (see previous post) seems to be the problematic nature of the universalist claims of the Olympic movement?
CF: Yes, this leads to a larger question that I think is essential to consider when thinking about the role of the Olympic Games in non-Western states. If non-Western states hope to use it as a soft power tool that would enable better relations with the West, köpa clomid online, then they end up roping themselves into having to be seen as assimilating Western values or facing failure. For instance, φτηνές φαρμακείο clomid, the Seoul Games in 1988 are often pointed to as a success. Why. Well, the classic story is that the Games were an important benchmark in the liberalization/democratization of South Korea, order clomid online cheap. The same logic was applied (irresponsibly, in my opinion) to Beijing, köpa rabatterade clomid. A successful Olympics this summer would have required China to ‘address’ its human rights record. As China chose to virtually ignore this, αγοράσετε clomid, the Beijing Olympics did not adequately perform their ‘rehabilitation’ function (some great work has been done on the rehabilitation function of the Olympics, which I discuss in ‘Towards the Future: The New Olympic Internationalism’ in Owning the Olympics: Narratives of the New China. In my mind, there is a fundamental problem with using a Western organization like the Olympic Movement to make soft power inroads in the West, online clomid. Order clomid online cheap, In these instances, soft power success equals assimilation. In 2008, Orientalism continues to loom large and there is a clear hierarchy of values and paradigms in global civil society, Clomid pedido en línea, with Western ones at the top. The unfortunate fact is that non-Western actors can’t gain soft power leverage in the West without assimilating. It’s my hope that the Games can be used as a tool for mutuality, but I don’t think we’re there yet and I think the Beijing Olympics proved this by trying and failing to create a soft power intervention without giving up China’s own approach on issues in which Western hegemonic powers assume they have the moral authority.
HÖ: In your research, North Dakota ND , you write about the resurgence of Cold War rhetoric in the US coverage of the Beijing Olympics. The resurgence of Cold War rhetoric was also the theme of a symposium on the media in Russia I recently attended – are these two instances exceptional. Or do they reflect a new geopolitical reality that is very similar to the Cold War?
CF: Yes, I address this in ‘Towards the Future: The New Olympic Internationalism’, where I compare the promotional material produced by the organizing committee for Beijing 2008 with the material produced for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, order clomid online cheap. Billig clomid apotek, In both instances, the organizers position the Games as a return to national glory. There is an assertive nationalism in the material that you don’t find in the material produced by London 2012 or Vancouver 2010. And, acheter clomid discount, at the same time, we are witnessing a resurgence of Cold War rhetoric in the Western media coverage of the two states. Købe clomid, What’s interesting is that although today's dynamics are quite different, ie. Order clomid online cheap, Russia and China don’t adhere to clear ideologies like they did in the Cold War, the language is very similar. It appears that the Western Cold War rhetoric and stereotypes are malleable enough to apply to this new dynamic. And, cheap clomid online, I think the Cold War tropes are still familiar enough for most of us that they’re quite comfortable and thus it makes re-energizing them all the more easy. As to whether this does indeed reflect a new geopolitical reality, Clomid, I don’t know. There are certainly tensions, but I hope that its the easy familiarity of the rhetoric that’s the reason for its resurgence as opposed to the actual geopolitical situation. What’s scary, though, is that even if this is the case, the rhetoric could become a self-fulfilling prophecy of sorts...
HÖ: One of the theoretical starting points of your work is Dayan and Katz’s very influential book Media Events: The Live Broadcasting of History – but you also have significant criticisms of the model presented in that book, order clomid online cheap. Do we need to move away from their “Television with a halo” model, Missouri MO Mo. . Why?
CF: I have great respect for Katz and Dayan’s work, but I think the model they originally presented doesn’t sufficiently account for the realpolitik of media events. Goedkope clomid apotheek, It should be noted that the authors themselves have questioned the validity of the model. Dayan, for instance, argues that the period when media events were presented by journalists with reverence (as opposed to the normal critical approach) has passed and that today’s events have lost the power to enchant audiences and broadcasters, Hawaii HI . Order clomid online cheap, Although he has moved away from his own model, he still suggests that it did capture the dynamics of media events in the past. I fundamentally disagree with this as it implies that there was indeed a more innocent or purer period in media history that was free of cynical strategizing. Yet, Osta clomid online, if we look at the history of the Olympics (Berlin 1936, Mexico 1968, Munich 1972, Seoul 1988 are the obvious examples) there was never a clear moment when television was produced with a halo or received by audiences as though it had a halo, αγοράζουν φτηνά clomid. The Olympics, and media events more generally, Buy clomid cod, have always been profoundly political and the struggles to define and contain media event narratives at the point of production and reception have always been there, a fact that the original model doesn’t capture adequately.
HÖ: What are the main media issues the London Olympic organizers will have to grapple with post-Beijing, do you think?
CF: A somewhat flippant answer is that the main issue they have to grapple with is that they’re post-Beijing. But, clomid for sale, there’s a lot of truth in this. While I do believe that there’s always been a fight to define media events, Beijing 2008 has amped up expectations for all parties about the potential of the Olympic Spotlight, order clomid online cheap. More groups have come to see the Olympics as a platform for presenting their concerns and debating existing global conventional wisdom narratives. Clomid online stores, Although I expect this will make me sound like more of a technological determinist than I am, much of this has to do with developments in new media. Beijing 2008 primarily reacted to new media through an ill-fated attempt at containment. London 2012 can’t afford to make the same error, buy cheap clomid. Order clomid online cheap, They’ve already begun to build a strategy around the notion of engagement. In theory, engagement makes a great deal more sense than trying to contain the myriad authors and access points that characterize a contemporary media event. Florida FL Fla. , But, what does engagement mean. How does London 2012 choose who to engage with. How can they incorporate global citizen participation without losing control of the narrative, purchase clomid. Should they do media interventions to make sure that the voiceless (those without mobile phones, facebook, California CA Calif. , and broadband) are part of this engagement exercise. These are just a few of the very difficult questions that London 2012’s media experts will have to grapple with.
Those interested in Chris’s work should check out the book chapters mentioned in the previous posts. And if you are in the London area, Chris is doing a lecture on the issue of British identity and the London 2012 Olympics at CAMRI, cheap clomid pills, University of Westminster, on March 11th.
Do note that Chris is still contributing to the Huffington Post, on matters Olympic and non-Olympic.
