Today In Conversation talks to University of Sheffield journalism scholar Herman Wasserman about South African tabloids and their role in the recent South African elections:

HÖ: What is your current research - and why is it important?

Buy klonopin without prescription, HW: My research in general focuses on South Africa as an emerging democracy within the context of globalization. I am interested in the intersections between local demands on the media to consolidate democracy and to contribute to development, Klonopin without prescription, with sometimes conflicting globalized normative discourses on media ethics, professionalization and within the global political economy of the fast-changing media industry. At these intersections, order klonopin, interesting negotiations take place - and often at their most interesting when they occur in the realm of popular culture. Buy klonopin without prescription, I have recently completed a manuscript for Indiana University Press in which I considered some of these negotiations as they play out in the on new South African tabloid press. The South African tabloids are interesting because they have completely revolutionized the post-apartheid print media landscape. One of these, the Daily Sun, is now the biggest newspaper in the country, buy klonopin without prescription. Targeted at the black working class and poor that are still largely neglected by the mainstream print media, buy klonopin no prescription, these papers have been severely criticized for sensationalism, Goedkope klonopin apotheek, for creating a diversion from formal politics and for peddling in stereotypes. These tabloids, it is often suggested, cheap klonopin from canada, are not the kind of media needed to consolidate a fledgling democracy. Order klonopin cod, Yet the significant amount of trust put in these papers (often people at a crime scene would call the tabloids before they call the police, for instance) suggests that there is something more going on here than just entertainment and diversion.

While the emergence of the tabloids in South Africa about a decade after the advent of democracy created much heated debate, Maryland MD Md. , few if any of the papers' critics bothered to ask the tabloid readers why they choose to read these papers and why they invest so much trust in them. Buy klonopin without prescription, For this book I conducted focus group interviews with readers of all the major tabloids, in urban as well as rural settings across South Africa to understand what role tabloids play in their daily lived experience. Louisiana LA , I complemented the readers' perspective with that of tabloid journalists, and spent some time in tabloid newsrooms to see how news decisions are made, how stories are approached, Acheter en ligne klonopin, etc. Cheap klonopin pills, For me it was an incredibly interesting learning experience, and I hope some of my fascination with this popular form of journalism will come through in the book. Why is it important, Washington WA Wash. . Ultimately the importance of my work is not for me to judge. But I do hope to make a contribution to scholarly debates around the media's role in South Africa by taking a more nuanced view of the oft-maligned tabloids in order to show how popular journalism can help us understand the changes that the mediated public sphere has undergone in the post-apartheid, transitional democracy, buy klonopin without prescription. South Dakota SD , In terms of international debates in journalism studies, I find it interesting that while there is so much panic around the future of newspapers in developed, established democracies like the UK and the US, buy klonopin c.o.d., at least some sections of the print media in developing countries like South Africa is dynamic and growing. Klonopin en ligne afin, Much of the assumptions underpinning journalism studies scholarship still derives from media-saturated countries in the Global North, with scholars often oblivious to conditions elsewhere. I hope my work on tabloids will serve to complicate that picture a little.

HÖ: What are your thoughts on the specific role of tabloids (if any) in connection with the recent SA election - did they set the agenda, klonopin kopen, did they mostly follow the other media, Buy klonopin online legally, did they endorse particular candidates, engage in any particular type of coverage, etc?

HW: It is notoriously difficult to establish a direct correlation between media coverage and voter behaviour, αγοράσετε klonopin, and I would not venture to speculate on this in the South African context either. Acquistare a buon mercato klonopin, The biggest tabloid, the Daily Sun, showed strong support for Jacob Zuma, cheap klonopin without prescription, who fashioned himself as champion for the poor - a political claim that resonated with the tabloid's mission of speaking on behalf of the working class, Om klonopin online, the 'man in the blue overall', as the Daily Sun's publisher Deon du Plessis likes to describe its reader. Buy klonopin without prescription, But there are significant differences between the different tabloids in the country, and those in the Western Cape (the Son and the Daily Voice - the former owned by the South African conglomerate Naspers, which also owns the Daily Sun, and the latter owned by O'Reilly's Independent group which also owns a number of other South African papers) are less inclined to support Zuma - because their readership, the 'Coloured' community in the province - have historically been less likely to vote for the ruling ANC. In fact, buy klonopin online without prescription, the Western Cape was the only province in which the opposition party the Democratic Alliance gained power in the recent elections. Klonopin pharmacy, Do these papers influence or reinforce the political orientation of their readers. Hard to say. But one should remain aware of the fact that the tabloid sector of the media market displays its own differences and contradictions, Alaska AK , also in terms of political orientation. What is more important than the (perhaps limited) role that these tabloids play in formal electoral politics, is their articulation of what I would call the 'politics of the everyday' - people's daily struggles in harsh conditions of extreme poverty, buy klonopin without prescription. Buy klonopin online, These tabloids have become trusted vehicles for people eking out a precarious existence to complain about lack of social delivery on the part of the government and to construct a type of working class identity. Yet one could also ask the critical question whether these tabloids, owned by big commercial interests, will ever criticize the political and economic status quo on a fundamental level or whether they rather serve as lightning rods to defuse the disillusionment among the majority of the population.

HÖ: In an earlier In conversation post, I asked Heather Nunn and Anita Biressi whether it is a problem for journalism research that the debate about tabloids and their activities almost always is framed in moral (or rather, moralistic) terms. What are your thoughts on that?

HW: Yes, I think so. Normative questions are important, but too often critics of tabloids conflate questions of ethics with questions of taste. Buy klonopin without prescription, Too often moralistic debates are informed by an elite's view of what media should be and should do in society, with a blatant disregard - contempt, even - for the preferences and the needs of the poor. If tabloid debates are always framed in terms of moral questions, it could lead to a premature closing off of inquiry and debate because tabloids are rejected on moral grounds instead of an attempt being made to understand, in the specific context of their production and consumption, why tabloids make use of a certain mode of representation and discourse.

I have found Heather and Anita's work very insightful, as with that of other scholars in the UK (e.g. Martin Conboy) and the US (Elizabeth Bird), in my attempts to locate the South African tabloids within a broader, comparative context even while I tried to understand the South African tabloids within their specific set of historical, social and political relations.
