So, how many people REALLY get their news from blogs?

The conventional wisdom is that audiences, and young audiences in particular, are more or less giving up on traditional media as news sources nowadays and instead flocking to the Internet and alternative news sources such as blogs, forums, wikis, etc. This conventional wisdom is rarely backed up by evidence - any evidence. In their recent report on how British news media represent the world, International Broadcasting Trust, include a chapter that presents the results of a study of how 18-25-year olds get their information about foreign affairs and the wider world. The study is based on focus group methodology and thus not representative in the statistical sense, but still provides some very interesting information: traditional media, primarily TV, are still the dominant source of news about foreign affairs. Youths in the sample do access the Internet regularly but not primarily for news - and when they do, it is the web pages of traditional news organisations that they seek out, like BBC online or guardian.co.uk. This does not mean that online news from non-traditional sources are irrelevant, of course - another interesting facet of the report is reading about how leading representatives of traditional news organisations really feel that the media environment is changing at that they need to keep up. So the proliferation of online news and citizen journalism has at least had one clear effect: it is making news managers sit up and take notice (even if the kids are not, it seems, such keen consumers of alternative online news after all).

Wouldn’t it by funny if all the attention that the so-called mainstream media was turning toward nontraditional ways of delivering the news turned out to be misplaced?

A recent report from Sweden indicates that politician’s blogs are mostly read by (surprise, surprise) other politicians…
