Le Monde is not enough

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments

I’m a bit late, as usual, but here it is: French newspaper Le Monde is fighting a takeover attempt by French media-and-other-things conglomerate Lagardère and Spanish media giant Prisa (among other things owners of Spanish daily El Pais). But why fight a takeover attempt when the newspaper is in dire financial straits (and has been for a long time), you may ask? The answer is simple if you know what sets Le Monde apart from most other newspapers of record in the world: it is part-owned and controlled by its staff, through the staff organization Société des Rédacteurs (Society of Journalists or Society of Writers, as it is sometimes translated). Over Le Monde’s 60-odd year history, the Socíété des Rédacteurs has seen its share of ownership dwindle and they are now down to around 13 per cent, but the staff retain the right to veto certain things, including the annual budget (!) and the selection of a new editor-in-chief. For a long time, Le Monde (through the Société des Rédacteurs also placed restrictions on how much income could be raised by advertising, in order to ensure editorial independence (a policy that of course is also likely to be at least a contributing factor behind the financial trouble the newspaper is now in). Is this proof that journalists can’t run a profitable newspaper? Are news-for-profit and editorial independence incompatible? Or will this mean that a distinctive press voice in France (and indeed the world) will be lost? I don’t know enough of the history and context of Le Monde to provide an answer, but I do think it is worth highlighting that one of few staff-owned/controlled newspapers in the world seems likely not to remain staff-owned/controlled in the future.
