All bagged and ready to go

Let's begin this live blogging thing by talking about something really important: conference bags. When you check in and register for a conference, you recieve a bag containing the conference program and other assorted promotional materials. The bag itself is commonly a shoulder bag, but there are other variants. I shudder at the old-lady-shopping-bag-style conference bag handed out at the 15th Nordic Media Conference in Reykjavik 1997, or the flourescent orange sackcloth handbag at the 2007 Nordic Media Conference in Helsinki. The bag is a standard conversation opener in the first, tentative, I-don't-know-anyone-but-I'll-look-stupid-if-I-just-stand-here hours of the conference. "So, I see you've checked in. Do you like the bag?" "Oh, it's OK, but the one I got at ECREA last year was way better." "We're you at ECREA last year? Did you meet so-and-so?". The networking can begin. Thank you, bag.
The most common criteria I and many of my colleagues use when judging a conference bag is whether we would want to continue using it after the conference is over and done with. A good conference bag is thus generally of the shoulder bag variety (though a colleague has put the aforementioned traffic cone-orange handbag from Helsinki to good use, just to annoy the rest of us, I think), has good extra pcokets and compartments, and should ideally sport very discreet conference and sponsor logos. So, how does this year's ICA bag compare to previous years, and to other conferences:
Type: Shoulder bag, adjustable strap, plus two extra handles for shopping-bag style carry mode. Very similar to the 2005 New York ICA bag. Not too big, not too small. Fits a laptop but does not leave much space for accessories. 6/10. Good, but nothing out of the ordinary.
Colour: Black and sand. Better than all-utility-black, slightly livelier but not ostentatious. I like it, but it may not be to everyone's tastes. 6/10 again.
Logos: Small, discreet and only on one side of the bag. Main sponsor Wiley-Blackwell has had the good taste to only add a very small version of their logo underneath the conference logo. 8/10.
Features: Plastic insert pocket for name tag (makes it easier when everyone around you have the exact same type of bag). No dividers in main compartment - major let-down! The 2000 IAMCR Singapore bag was really good for this, lots of cleverly-organized extra compartments in the lid of the briefcase-style bag (the Singapore bag scored low on other counts though, as it was nigh-impossible to open while carrying it, you had to put it down every time you wanted to get something out or in). Now my papers and stuff will get all mixed up. It has a smallish outside pocket though, as well as an outside pen-pocket. No mobile phone pocket. 4/10 as it has no main compartment dividers, but it still compared favourably to the featureless Reykjavik and Helsinki bags.
Overall: 5/10. "Meh" sums it up. It's an OK bag, but us world-weary conference veterans have seen better. And worse.
Will blog more about content later. Content of the bag, that is.

Fun read! Next time, take a picture. Seriously, I’d love that.
Best,

Yeah, I know, it’s really only half a post without the picture. But I forgot to bring my digital camera… still haven’t got my head around this whole multi-media thing…

So, I see you’ve checked in… will you be at the reception?

Sure I will! See you there!

Hey, Henrik. Those Helsinki bags are really perfect as shopping bags. And what is wrong with old ladies aesthetic preferences?

Well the aesthetics is one thing but what about taking note of the context - I mean who choses a bag made of some sort of cotton fabric and impossible to close, in a cold and rainy place like Iceland…?!

Göran - there’s nothing wrong with old ladies’ aesthetic preferences, it’s just that I’m not an old lady.
Anna Maria - I’m with you. The sackcloth Helsinki bag would have been more appropriate for Reykjavik.

Not bringing the camera is a bit of an oversight - you can save yourself a lot of typing with a single well-chosen pic! And I suppose your phone is too primitive?
I think the AoIR’s bag was best - it was an OK bag but only labelled AoIR so it could be reused at the next conf in the series. People were encouraged to drop them off at the end (I did)

Hey, I loved that Helsinki bag. In fact, I stole yours. It was chic and stylish. Your new bag, sounds, well, meh.
