Yes, but what’s in it?

The 2008 Montreal ICA conference bag contains (in the order I picked them out of the bag):
* 2 drinks tickets for tonight's reception.
* Invitation to sponsor's reception, including an admonition to get there early otherwise the complementary beverage tickets will run out. I swear to you, I didn't know that the first two things I would pick out of the bag would be drinks vouchers. Promise!
* Call for papers and invitation for the 2009 ICA conference in Chicago. The deadline is Nov 3 of this year, folks, and don't you forget it!
* Promotional flyer for CQ Press.
* Conference registration receipt and name tag. An envelope attached to the receipt contains a mysterious pink ribbon marked "Sustaining member" that I can glue on to my name tag. What is it for? What have I done to deserve it?
* Plastic name tag holder. Ooo, it's magnetic! No fabric-ruining pins here in stylish Montreal!
* Invitation for a book launch, "Broadcasting, Voice and Accountability". The book launch will feature a "signature session" with Marc Raboy and Monroe Price. A book signing? For an academic book? Unheard of. Or maybe I don't go to enough North American conferences?
* Promotional flyer for Ecquid Novi: Journal of African Journalism Studies.
* Promotional flyer for a new book, "Participation and Media Production", edited by Nico Carpentier and Benjamin De Cleen.
* Two catalogues from Media Education Foundation.
* A world map including details of media and communication research associations across the globe. Neat!
* An invitation to participate in the ICA online forums during the conference. "We are looking for a few good blogger-types who will go to each of their sections Forums and cause a stir. Create topics for discussions, ask questions, investigate theories, ponder philosophies." Sorry guys, no can do, I'm too busy blogging.
* List of nearby reastaurants and tourist destinations. Thanks!
* List of conference errata (i.e. who has cancelled, who will replace them etc)
* Promotional flyer announcing a faculty position at Marist College.
* The conference programme, all 290 pages of it. Phew!
* And finally and mysteriously, a 45 ml jar of "Kara-Mel" brand "Caramel avec fleur de sel" (saltwater taffy if I'm not mistaken). Welcome to Montreal, I guess.
No notebook. No promotional pen. Meh. Will probably end up using my own briefcase for the duration of the conference.
NB: More substantial posts to follow, I promise. I have now read all the papers in the session I am chairing on Saturday and they are all really interesting. Plus, tomorrow there are a couple of sessions that I am really looking forward to.

what did you think of the program cover?
one correction: I put the logo art on the bag using WB’s and ICA’s logos, not Wiley Blackwell… thanks for the ‘good taste’ remark! ; ) (I agree!)

A visit from ICA’s own web guru - I’m impressed! Mea culpa on the bag design and credit where credit is due, very nice and tasteful logo placement/design, Sam.
As for the programme cover: the last programme cover I saw was the 2005 New York one and that also had a fairly generic skyline… It’s nicely done, but what is the USP of this year’s cover? Enlighten me!
