News roundup: European journalism
June 9th, 2008 · No Comments
Yay, finally sent off my revised article to the journal! Then immediately had a phone conversation with a co-author about our next article... and thus the cycle of life continues. Or something.
In the news: European TV channel Euronews, (which focuses on EU and European-level news), previously mostly famous because no-one watches it (see research), has undergone a massive rebranding in order to position itself as a serious competitor to CNN, BBC World and al-Jazeera. I'm not holding my breath.
Also, European Journalism Centre has launched a new website, European Neighbourhood Journalism Network. The site is aimed at journalists of southern Mediterranean, Eastern European and southern Caucasus countries, and the aim is to help train these journalists in EU reporting, mainly through networking. Interesting initiative - it's a follow-up from a similar, previous EJC project building a network for Mediterranean journalists, titled (appropriately), EU for Mediterranean Journalists. I am of course always interested in attempts to contribute to that elusive thing, a "European Public Sphere" - it remains to be seen whether the EJC project will be successful, but including Europe's neighbours as well as Europe itself is certainly a step in the right direction. Not only Europeans have a stake in the European public sphere.
